Plaid Is Fall 2026's Defining Print: How to Wear It Modestly

If one print ran through the Fall/Winter 2026 shows, from Paris to Milan, it was the check. Tartan, glen plaid, gingham, softly blurred madras: designers treated it less as a heritage throwback and more as a season-long uniform. Good news for the modest wardrobe, because plaid looks its best on exactly the pieces we love most, starting with the long, full skirt.

What we saw on the runways

At Chanel, Matthieu Blazy scattered checks across the collection, from mixed-check shirt-and-skirt pairings to bouclé cut to look like an oversized flannel shirt. Stella McCartney matched a double-breasted glen plaid coat to a skirt in the same check, while Etro went bohemian with a tartan pleated skirt suit. Checks also appeared at Celine, Chloé, Dior, Louis Vuitton, Dries Van Noten and Burberry, often in warm autumn tones, and often more than one pattern at a time.

Three ideas stood out: plaid worn as a matching set, two different checks mixed in one outfit, and plaid layered with knits and shirts.

The full plaid maxi skirt

The easiest way in is a skirt that does the talking. Our Hannah Plaid Maxi Skirt comes in a warm brown-and-cream check, with a smocked waist and a full, flowing shape that falls to the ankle. It has the runway's cosy heritage mood, in a length you will actually wear every day.

Pair it with the matching Hannah Oversized Knit Sweater in chocolate brown. Keeping the knit in one of the skirt's tones gives you the polished set look seen at Stella McCartney, with no effort at all.

Plaid, made fluid

Not every check has to be wool. The Rachel Plaid Satin Maxi Skirt prints a soft, watercolour-effect plaid on silky satin, so it moves instead of standing stiff. The burgundy version echoes the season's richer colours, while caramel keeps things soft and autumnal.

Dress it down the Parisian way: a relaxed sweater, sneakers, a knit tied around the waist and sunglasses. Satin and sporty is one of the easiest ways to make a maxi skirt feel new. For an evening or a celebration, swap the sweater for the Rachel Ruffle Sleeve Chiffon Blouse in olive khaki, with its romantic tiered ruffle cuffs.

Layered like the runway

Layering was everywhere this season: a sweater over a shirt, with the collar and cuffs peeking out. It is also the most natural modest styling trick there is. Slip the Camille Oversized Cotton Shirt under a knit, let the collar show, and finish with a plaid maxi skirt. Burgundy or blue work beautifully with both of our checks.

Checks meet stripes

Feeling bolder? Designers paired checks with stripes, and checks with other checks. Try the Juliette Space-Dye Striped Knit Sweater, with its plum, pink, navy and burnt orange stripes, over the caramel Rachel skirt. The rule: let one colour connect the two prints, and keep everything else simple.

How to make plaid feel modern

Length
Stay long

A maxi length makes a check feel elegant, never schoolgirl.

Balance
One hero

Plaid skirt? Keep the top solid, in a tone taken from the print.

Texture
Mix fabrics

Chunky knits, satin and chiffon all soften a classic check.

Season
All winter

One plaid skirt, autumn to winter: just change the knit.
